YESSSS!

Ok, so after 4 days of soldering witness the new version of “Diskokugel” with speakers attached. I am quite satisfied with the looks.

out now: 0.2beta

The longer you look, the more patterns you'll find...

The wireframe. With the the background cancelled out it's more comprehensible.

Doing all the soldering I had plenty of time to contemplate on the design so far:
The wireframe has quite a few disadvantages considering the further construction. It is not very exact, not very stable and I haven’t figured out a way to construct and attach proper enclosures for the individual speakers to prevent the acoustic cancelation of lower frequencies.
I could fill the whole thing with polyurethane foam and carve it out like a pumpkin, but that’s not what I’d call elegant. So I am considering to somehow build the thing on a plastic basis. Cast it, mill it with a cnc-mill, whatever…
Anyway, I will leave this problem be for now and rather start working with the existing model. That means:
- get an Arduino
- connect it to the existing circuit and PD
- put it all into the ball and check out what it can do

All that in probably two weeks, because now I need a vacation from it all.

As an alternative to the usual sound clash on the camping site we delivered a common fm radio signal with music and information on what was going on for everybody, including the crews quarters and cafeteria. We also involved the audience by giving a platform to visitors to present their own musical projects and play as djs in our studio.

Those who didn’t make it to the festival could get some festival-atmosphere at home by listening to our internet stream.

2005 Frequenzwechsel was on air for the first time at the SonneMondSterne-Festival. Resonance by both visitors and the internat audience (at peak times up to 400 people listeners!) was very positive. Motivated by our success we decided to keep streaming on a regular basis independently on a biweekly basis.

The program emphasized on the presentation of elektronic music projects, especially from eastern germany, particularly (free) net music and related topics. The conten of these broadcasts was presented within the second assignment at the SonnMondSterne festival in 2006.

Sound installation for the “Inventionen” 2002 sound art festival. A marble run, 12 meters high, was built into the stairwell of the former federal bank building, Berlin.

In cooperation with professor Robin Minard and Andre Bartetzki of the Franz Liszt conservatory, 8 students of the Bauhaus University were asked to do a sound installation in the stairwell of the former federal bank building in berlin. The installation was part of the audio art festival “Inventionen”. The idea of a giant marble run manifested in the early stage of the developement and was then carried out.

Main part of the concept was the connection between the several parts of the exhibition in the different floors of the building and the disconnection of the active visitor and the listener. Visitors could pick up a marble from a copper cattle at the ground floor end of the stairway. These could be inserted into the copper tubes at the upper end of the stairs on the second floor. Position and noise of the marble inside the tubes created the sound that moved up the stairs via 12 independent speakers.

My main contribution to the project was the design and construction of the marble run. Neither the absolute length nor the amount and position of the sensors used was clear when the construction was designed. Thus I emphasized on modularity and visual integration into the the architecture.

More information on “Rumor” and some audio samples can be found on Andre Bartetzkis homepage.
